Our Beautiful Challenges
By Marie W.O.W.C.P.
Lately, I have felt a little off in life.
Not necessarily lost—
but disconnected from myself.
I think sometimes life becomes so loud,
so emotionally heavy,
that we forget how important it is to center ourselves again.
For me,
centering myself is not always hard to do.
The hardest part is slowing my mind down enough
to actually focus on doing it.
One of the ways I ground myself
is by picturing a place that feels safe to me.
A place that feels like home.
As much as I would love to physically go to some of those places,
it is not always possible.
But I’ve learned something important:
Just because I cannot physically go somewhere
does not mean I cannot mentally go there.
Sometimes healing begins in the mind first.
When I allow myself to mentally step into that quiet place,
I can finally begin calming the noise inside me.
And once I become grounded,
I can begin opening what I call my “mental toolbox.”
So what is a mental toolbox?
To me,
a mental toolbox is the collection of things you carry inside yourself
that help you survive difficult moments.
It is what you reach for
when your thoughts feel overwhelming,
when emotions become too heavy,
or when life feels out of control.
Everyone’s toolbox looks different.
Some people carry:
- prayer
- music
- writing
- meditation
- therapy
- deep breathing
- art
- nature
- movement
- memories
- or comforting routines
Some people carry the voice of someone they love.
Some people carry hope.
For me,
writing has become one of the biggest tools in my toolbox.
Writing helps me unpack emotions
that become too heavy to carry silently.
Meditation helps me slow my thoughts down.
Quiet spaces help me reconnect with myself.
And mentally visiting peaceful places reminds me
that safety still exists within me—
even during difficult seasons of life.
I think sometimes we forget
that coping skills are not weaknesses.
They are survival tools.
They are signs that we are trying.
And honestly,
building a healthy mental toolbox takes time.
Sometimes years.
You slowly learn:
- what helps you heal
- what helps you breathe
- and what helps you return to yourself again
That toolbox may change throughout life too.
What worked for you years ago
may not work now.
And that is okay.
Life changes.
We change.
Our healing changes too.
But I think the important thing
is continuing to build a toolbox filled with things
that brings us peace instead of harm.
Things that help us stay connected to ourselves.
Grounding yourself
is not about becoming perfect.
It is about finding your way back to yourself
when life pulls you too far away.
And maybe…
That quiet, safe place inside your mind
is where healing begins. 🌻
